Hard To Teach - Secondary English
Teacher Liana Swanton takes the fear out of grammar by breaking it down in a simple way that's fun for pupils.
Embedding subordinate clauses in sentences using a simple red and green card method gets students out of their seats and actively building sentences.
Comma practice involves displaying rules of commas around the classroom and getting pupils to write their own examples.
Meanwhile, Liana from Uplands Community Technology College in East Sussex, uses innovative cards to encourage her pupils to make sentences and conversations with more sophisticated connective words.

I totally agree with Mrdriss30 January 2010 - 13:22I totally agree with Mrdriss. This won't work with crowded classes, especially if you have to teach more than 30 - 40 students in a class which is absolutely frustrating. But the ones who teach less people in their classes should try these ideas out.

Watch this programme!18 February 2007 - 22:24Found this programme really helpful. Though it was aimed at secondary teachers, as a Year 6 teacher I know my class would enjoy and benefit from many of these activities. Congratulations for taking a potentially uninspiring subject and really bringing it to life!
