Holland - Sex Education 2
In this programme, we explore Long Live Love - Holland's most widely taught sex education programme for 12- to 15-year-olds.
Subsidised by the Dutch Government, Long Live Love was developed in the early 90s in response to the threat of HIV and Aids. The package includes a video featuring teenagers with very different views on sex, as well as a magazine and a teachers' pack.
Sex education teacher Claire Barr travels to the Winkler Prins school in the north of Holland to meet a group of students and their teacher, Inge Lammers, as they prepare to embark on their first lesson.
The students start in the school library where, from a staggering selection of more than 30 books on sex education, they learn how to find reliable sources of information.
At the whiteboard, students are invited to write up slang words for vagina, penis and sex and then choose the most appropriate ones.

The Netherlands has the4 September 2008 - 22:13The Netherlands has the lowest rates for teen pregnancy (8.4 per 1,000) and abortion (5 to 7 per 1000)in the world and among the oldest ages for first intercourse (17.7 years). Many would have expected the opposite results, but the subject has been approached in this way in the Netherlands since the 1970s. Clearly it works. Isn't this an outcome that people of many beliefs and faiths aspire to? In the words of one researcher, The Dutch government has always accepted the fact that education was better than denial. I think its about time we16 June 2008 - 06:56I think its about time we stop generalizing our opinions on to others and accept sole responsibility for them and understand that just like us . . others have a right to their opinions . . . we need to be able to provide a non-judgemental atmosphere as was beautifully showcased in the video and discuss the basis of differing opinions. At the end of the day this form of discussions are required as we all have to live with each other . . compassionately!
