Creative Development
St Mary's School in Bridgend is a pilot school for the new Foundation Phase. This programme looks at how they are encouraging creative development in their reception class.
Teacher Jackie Davies discusses how the support staff are there to help lead the learning. Nursery nurse Hayley Hitchings has a group of eight children for the bear hunt activity in the classroom and outside.
The children do lots of creative activities under the umbrella topic of Autumn. Jackie discusses the Foundation Phase planning and how detailed it must be so that lots of activities can happen at once.

Learning through play22 May 2007 - 09:30I am a Y1 teacher working with a class of 30 children and one hour's classroom support per day. I would love to be able to offer my children some of these wonderful activities which they would benefit from in so many ways. One of the crucial elements here is the ratio of staff to children. My own creative juices are longing to get going again after years of trying to fit in too many subjects with too little time. I think it might be time to move to Wales!!!!

let children play and experiment their world10 April 2007 - 17:12It is wonderful to watch the video. I could actually see different ways how children learn. I had my training as a nursery teacher in Germany. When I taught there in a Kindergarten (nursery school) I very much let the children explore the world in the same way as shown in the video. When I moved to the Netherlands I got my bachelor of education there. I learned a lot through the training. What worries me is that in Holland young children are often working at tables with worksheets and are already tested aged 4! I hope that we all across Europe will learn to let children explore their world through play using their skills as children who are perfectly capable of learning.

learning through play video19 March 2007 - 14:19A beautiful video to watch. I wonder when we will see just how different 'these' children will become when compared with those who have experienced other curricula. Please keep up updated on this, very interesting.
