Part of the series Primary ICT Whiteboard

Primary maths consultant Darren Ellsum presents two lessons showing how ICT can be used to teach abstract concepts in numeracy.

In the first lesson, year four teacher Paul Greenwood uses a free online game to introduce writing fractions as decimals.

In the second lesson year six teacher Friedel Kotze uses interactive slides to demonstrate rotational symmetry.

ICT can be a really useful tool helping pupils develop mental images of abstract concepts in numeracy.

I thought that both clips were great examples of how we can use ICT as a tool to support difficult concepts in maths. As I work with predominately visual learners, this is a superb way to teach maths where children can actually see things for themselves without trying to visualise. I especially enjoyed the clip about rotational symmetry and as I will become an NQT in a year 6 class in september, I will definately use this resource. The teacher in the clip got the pupils to design a family crest using rotational symmetry. This could also tie in with a history topic about crests and heraldry perhaps.
