Boys' underachievement in literacy is of constant concern to schools. But at Ardleigh Green Junior School in Havering, achievement levels are rising. Louise Bartlett, literacy co-ordinator, offers insights into approaches she has found successful in encouraging boys to engage with literacy lessons.

Louise teaches balanced report writing to her Year 6 class. Using speaking and listening tasks as the foundation for written work, she demonstrates that incorporating multimedia techniques in lessons can offer a route to literacy for students wary of books. Role-play also proves successful, with many boys finding it easier to express their opinions in character.

Key points:

  • Speaking and listening form a solid foundation for written work
  • Multimedia techniques ease reluctant students into books
  • Role-play encourages boys to participate
