The School Bursar
This programme looks at the issues that can be handled by a bursar or school business manager and considers alternative models, including training for existing staff.
In this programme, schools of various sizes are paid a visit to find out how they manage financial matters. Millfields Community School in Hackney is one of the largest primaries in the country. With a full time school business manager, it draws funding from the European social fund and other sources.
Gainsborough School in Newham has bought into a shared bursar service offered by the local council. The headteacher feels that she has just the right balance between independence and support.
Sudbourne Primary School in Brixton, south London, is the smallest school featured. The headteacher manages all school business, in partnership with governors. He sees potential in linking with other schools.
