Anger Management
Valerie Vassell and Jackie Roberts are teaching assistants (TAs) who want to learn techniques to help them manage their pupils' anger. They work one-to-one with learning mentor Sarah Harris. Together they examine strategies that can be adapted for TAs to use in large-group situations.
Three areas of anger management are discussed - recognising physical symptoms, establishing boundaries and developing coping strategies.
Sarah works with an individual pupil, focussing on the physical aspects of anger. Valerie and Jackie next work with a small group of pupils to recognise their anger and draw out their feelings.
The TAs next watch Sarah working with a boy on establishing rules to govern anger. Valerie and Jackie then discuss the rules they would like him to follow.
Finally, Sarah coaches a boy on strategies for being angry without breaking the rules. Valerie and Jackie's group use roleplay to investigate potentially troublesome situations and discuss appropriate responses.
This programme explores:
- Using learning mentors to manage pupil anger
- Implementing a collaborative process between pupils and teaching staff to draw behaviour boundaries

ANGER MGT11 November 2008 - 14:41management of anger goes beyound, immediate reaction to opposite reaction but it involves the situations surrounding the action, maturity of the people involved as well as the background of the people involve.
The situation is about what the issue is really about: who is much more concern, will the aftermath be distastrious or affect adversily.
mMaturity, what level of shock /insult can you withstand, what have you experience to be able to with stand the cause of anger

Anger management11 July 2008 - 11:46I have a lot of issues with my 10 year old being angry both at home and at school. I found the idea of focusing on how we are angry and anger rules rather than what made you angry quite refreshing as it allows you to work through the anger rather than focus on often trifling incidents that trigger it. I particularily liked looking at how anger effects your body as I can use it with Matthew so we both recognise when he is(and me!) becoming angry and we can then think about expressing it through clean anger rather than dirty. Also by looking at changes in your body you can see how well you are calming down and getting rid of that anger. I will certainly try out some of these ideas.
