Part of the series School Matters

A look at the different challenges faced with the arrival in Britain of emigre children from the new EU states, such as Poland.

Since EU expansion the UK has seen a transformation in the nature of immigration, with Europeans from the newly admitted eastern states becoming the dominant group.

Much is made of the negative effects of immigration, but this programme looks at how four schools, who have been facing the challenge of integrating large numbers of newly arrived Polish students across the key stages, are not only managing but see benefits from their arrival.

Most of the new students arrive with very little English but all four schools have been successful at including them, whether they have been able to draw on an existing Polish community or not.

      Polish Inclusion

Very useful film outlining how schools in England are tackling the question of Polish pupils accessing the curriculum and integrating into the wider community through the school and its activities. In Scotland we have similar issues, albeit on a smaller scale. Some useful ideas emerged for me, including adult volunteers for children's reading and general learning suport ; using the creative arts to break down barriers as well as access lessons ( using photography) and interesting to see how the school's notions of non English speakers changed when the two Polish girls began to play the piano so beautifully. Teachers commented on how these silent girls suddenly began to communicate to the school through music i.e. even those who are educators and know that not having a specific language is no indicator of intelligence it still does matter greatly. To me the girls were perceived as having more potential than before , whereas it was only teachers perceptions that had altered. The girls were intelligent throughout their perid of initial isolation.
As a resource I shall show the film to other staff and it will act as a point of discussion towards future planing and provision.
