Part of the series Inspirations

A secondary school and its local community take an holistic approach to reduce the environmental impact of the school run.

The journey to and from school is responsible for nearly a quarter of all cars on the road during morning rush hour. Aside from environmental issues, car travel is also contributing to the rise in childhood obesity as fewer children walk or cycle to school.

Currently, only two per cent of children cycle to school in this country. Sustrans, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity, hopes to rectify this situation with Bike It ? a groundbreaking project that has already quadrupled the number of children cycling to its target schools.

To demonstrate the project's success, we travel to Hummersknott School and Language College in Darlington where the number of children cycling has risen by 70 per cent over the last two years.

I'm a French college professor- teaching English and Business English to 18 to 25 year olds at our university (Toulon, South of France). Despite the exceptionally good weather we enjoy here (300 days of sunshine a year), most of my students -I would say , 98% of them- drive a car to college, with the obvious resulting parking and safety problems on campus.
It just goes to show that our younger generations need a scheme like this to educate them into riding a bike to school or work. When they are 18 or 20, it's already too late. Too many factors come into play then : independence ' desires', showing off in front of girls etc...
So, a great idea that we need to inspire ourselves from.
I personally will play this film to my students and spread the word. I also teach by example as, you must have guessed by now, I, too, ride my bike to the Uni every day ! JJ
