From Good To Outstanding - Steve Kubairsingh
Springwell Junior School has rated primary teacher Steve Kubairsingh's lessons as "good". In this programme, school inspector Clare Gillies assesses one of his Year 3 maths lessons.
Clare's feedback on Steve's coordinates lesson highlights a need for him to provide more real life context and a greater clarity of intention.
Steve visits communications coach Roger Terry for some one-to-one CPD advice and to work on his presentation skills. He then works with primary maths expert Darren Ellsum on the art of teaching.
Steve has just three weeks back in the classroom to turn their advice into action, before Clare returns to observe a second lesson and deliver the final verdict.
Will Steve make the grade? Will he raise his game from "good" to "outstanding"?

Congratulations for inspiration!4 January 2008 - 11:36Working to guide primary teachers around the world through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, I was touched and inspired by your connection with, and respect for, the students in your class.
The connection and excitement you inspired in those pupils was palpable, and included the passion and flexibility which is exactly what I look for in teachers.
A prominent educational brain researcher Dr. Jo-Ann Deak, who has inspired me with her presentations in the past, summarised days of (humorous) clinical presentations by saying 2 things positively affect student learning more than anything else...
are you ready for this?...
1. The perception on the part of the learner that the teacher cares about to the learner
2. The perception on the part on the learner that the teacher cares about what they are teaching
Congratulations Steve! You ticked both boxes for me!
You are the kind of outstanding teacher I would go out of my way to meet!
Shine on...
If I tell you that I wish that my only son could have you as a teacher, you will understand the magnitude of my compliment!!!

Re : Congratulations for inspiration!12 February 2010 - 08:33Jax, I really liked your comment. It was not just complimentary, it was from the heart - actually believing every bit you said. I see a spark in you too. I wish I knew how to say it as well.
Yes, I too loved Steve's energy, his passion for teaching, his belief in his children and respect for them, engaging them & making them happy while learning. You recounted a great point about the learner's perceptions. Steve's children know that he cares for them & loves teaching his subject.
Steve made a very important point at the end about not going against the grain. So he will always retain his spontaneity and find his own path to making learning exciting in his classes.

Outstanding should be standing out27 July 2009 - 10:05Well done Steve! I think your comment about not 'going against your grain' is a very pertinent one. Whilst these people have given great advice, you've got to find your own way there. The very nature of outstanding should be that it doesn't fit a model, I think if you follow this you will undoubtedly be labeled as outstanding because you are obviously really, really good already!

it was absolutely lovely to21 May 2009 - 10:57it was absolutely lovely to see u in action as the passion was there. earlier the inspector said what makes an outstanding lesson yo students is that almost certainly they will say that the teacher was enthusiastic about the subject and now that it was there throughout the lesson, she does not find it outstanding?
I think what should be on the teacherstv are some outstanding lessons, from each subject, from minute 1 to last minute and observe what is it that makes those teachers and lessons outstanding!

Steve - From Good to Outstanding22 March 2008 - 10:56I agree with Jax Webb (January 4, 2008)
It was a privilege to watch your lessons - yes BOTH the 'before' and 'after'.
What we were all supposed to be learning (lifting lessons to outstanding) was almost incidental. What really sruck me was how passionate you are about teaching and the mutual respect in your classroom just shone out for all to see.
Yes - take away the finer points you were given to develop your teaching BUT never allow that to dampen your spirit!
Outstanding for Ofsted vrs Outstanding for life. I know which one should be the winner!
Thank you!

Brave move - spoke volumes about the quality of your teaching!21 November 2007 - 13:10Thank you, Steve, for taking up the challenge of being involved in this programme. I thought the most valuable thing about it was not the grade at the end, but seeing your readiness to keep working on the quality of your lessons. Inspiring.

From Good to Outstanding25 October 2007 - 08:43Well done to you Steve, I think you are brilliant. You have taught me something in the short time I have watched the clip. I am encouraged by the energy and determination that you possess. Although I am not an expert (only just started my third year of teaching) we have to take constructive critcism from the experts and do with it what we please. We can either have a 'pity party' or use the advice given to better ourselves as teachers and help aid the development of the future generation. Once again Steve FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

Outstanding lessons10 October 2007 - 16:22Food for thought! I thought it made 'outstanding' seem possible for all teachers to achieve. So often I think that it is only those extremely talented teachers who could ever dream of achieving outstanding. The techniques described here are accessable by all.
