Primary Maths - Negative Numbers 1
Year 4 teacher Josie Clark demonstrates how she uses very specific language to explain to her pupils the difference between one and negative one.
In the past, Josie taught negative numbers using analogies like bank accounts or thermometers, but some children were confused.
Watch as her pupils practise new words such as "negative" and "subtract". They demonstrate their understanding by moving cards, which helps them to visualise the actions of adding, subtracting and dividing negative numbers.
Maths adviser Richard Dunne is also on hand with some handy hints and tips.

Negative numbers8 August 2008 - 15:24How would you tackle teaching -4/2? If its a negative divided by a negative, they just count the piles of negative ones they have created but they cant create piles of postitive ones as there arent any on the maths table.

Negative Numbers20 May 2008 - 11:03Throughout the video the children were accidentally using "minus" instead of "negative". Wouldn't it be better to reserve "minus" for the adjective used for negative numbers and only use "subtract" or "take away" for the imperative verb?
The word minus is not a verb anyway and is already used for negatives in temperature etc.

Negative numbers2 November 2007 - 20:39Many thanks for showing so clearly how to teach this subject. I really enjoyed the video and the use of language e.g. - = an imperitive verb the other an adjective.
Great resources! Thanks Caroline
