Division, Volume and Other Topics
These eight lesson starts for KS2 maths pupils present a dramatised situation that highlights a mathematical problem.
Bring your maths lessons to life with the following:
- Using angles to find Pirate Kate's lost treasure
- Using fractions and percentage to help Nateisha with her packed lunch survey
- Using division in both The Thief's Problem and The Puppy Problem
- Exploring volume and division in Mrs Hanson's Problem
- Using multiplication in both Piggy's Problem and The Train Problem
- Using percentages in The Cake Problem
A suitable year group is suggested for each lesson start, reflected by a tile board at the start of each problem, where the topic is also indicated.

8 Lesson Starts26 March 2009 - 10:37I have a Y3 lower ability group who find it hard to explain their calculations and mulitplication is such a hard concept for some children. Your Miss Piggy clip has given me ideas to extend this starter further and use it with some oracy techniques. Thank you very much for this resource.

funny and intelligent15 November 2007 - 13:35it's a real good resource to introduce many problems with pupils. the differents situations are funny and if we don't want to play the fool as a comedian,we can show the video.
Children love puppies, pig pirate and cake... So I think it's a very good resource

Re : Primary ICT- Whiteboard Maths- 8 lesson starts.25 January 2008 - 10:10This is a great interactive resource to encourage discussion and applying maths in a problem solving context. It can easily fit into lessons and would engage the children. I like the fact that it covers a wide range of maths topics and I plan to use it in my classes.

Maths - 8 lesson Starts2 May 2008 - 07:21Paula
Thank you - a fabulous resource - I am going to use this with my trainee teachers today to discuss differentiation in problem solving and, and development of a closed problem to an open problem (like the extension activities). Hopefully they will then feel confident to include the resource in their own maths activities.
A note to the producer - some of the suggested Year groups on the title pages do not match those on the lesson plan. Will there be a video to follow that shows demonstration lessons using this resource (like the story starts)?

White bord maths10 February 2008 - 07:52I work in China with middle school children and clips like this are an excellent way to teach English vocabulary.
There are some other excellent clips but unfortunately they cannot be downloaded or seen in China.

Downloading the individual clips19 January 2008 - 22:33I was able watch the programme on my pc and at the start it said that the clips could be found on the teacher tv website. This has confused me since I could not find the individual clips. Is it possible to download the individual story starts and if so how ?
-
-
-
Re : Sorry - not available, yet...21 January 2008 - 11:02Our apologies for the confusion, Louise.
It is our intention to make the individual story starts available as clips, but they are not currently available. We will make them available in the future.
You could use the timecodes to guide you to each clip, or download the programme and create a clip of the story start you'd like to use.

More please!17 November 2007 - 21:31What a fantastic idea - I can see this being a popular resource with both the pupils and teachers in my school when I share it on Monday. So many of our children relaly need to see that there are applications for their maths in every day life.
Are there any plans to make more? If not, we'd love some please!
