Succession Planning
Succession planning should be a crucial item on any governing body's agenda, given the looming crisis in headteacher recruitment. In this programme, we visit two schools where this strategy is now being employed.
At Westfield Community Technology College, chair of governors Chris Miller and vice-chair Paul Rosen were dismayed when they found out - on the eve of the summer holidays - that the headteacher was taking early retirement.
At Sayes Court Junior School in Surrey, chair of governors Doris Neville-Davies describes how circumstances meant that governors were initially unable to appoint a substantive head.
Find out how governors at both schools are now identifying and nurturing leadership potential in senior and middle management, enabling them to be more prepared for leadership change in the future.

Succession Planning6 February 2008 - 15:21I find the ideas thought provoking, particularly in a country where schools suffer from a lack of effective leaders. The various problems our (Moroccan) education system stem from the fact that decision-makers are not yet aware that governance is part and parcel of the system. The spirit of leadership is not yet understood. We need to probe into the various aspects of the philosophy behind leadership at the different levels of the educational hierarchy.
The programme is food for thought. Thank you.
