Secondary Gifted and Talented - Classroom Practice
The DfES National Strategy suggests that in any classroom, up to 10 per cent of the pupils can be defined as gifted or talented. "Gifted" is used to describe pupils with great ability or potential in academic subjects while "talented" describes pupils with advanced skills or aptitude in the performing or visual arts, sport or PE.
This programme looks at some teaching strategies used at Highams Park School in north London to meet the needs of their gifted and talented pupils. Examples of good classroom practice include:
- A Year 7 gifted and talented English group moving on to higher level work
- A Year 11 English session where the gifted and talented are stretched by more complex tasks
- A maths lesson with individual challenges for the more able
- How to use the skills of a talented pupil in a whole-class sports session
- Challenging questions in a Year 11 science lesson
- Giving gifted and talented drama pupils special roles to initiate activities for the whole class
