KS3/4 ICT - Online Safety
This programme outlines simple classroom activities to help teachers to take practical steps to keep pupils safe online and to increase awareness of the potential dangers of internet usage.
E-safety consultant Dr Alan Beecham visits Rhodesway Secondary School in Bradford to work with a group of Year 9 students. Humanities teacher Haroon Gardee and Year 7 inclusion manager Max Crowther join Dr Beecham to gauge pupils' reaction to a fictitious profile they created on a social networking site.
Another activity highlights the dangers of sharing too much information, while a further task focuses on security and privacy settings.
At Stocksbridge High School in Sheffield, e-safety officers apply an internet safety policy, run parental awareness evenings, and act as a point of contact for pupils.

E-Safety!18 June 2008 - 08:02Excellent video, I've recommended the video to many friends at schools in the hope that they show it to the children!! Very well researched too! An issue like this needs to be dealt with caution and professionalism, so full credit to the research team!

Walking the tightrope7 June 2008 - 06:35A good programme which highlights that we need to be careful and vigilant and teach our students to be the same. Dr Burton hit the right note when she talked about appropriate for age. One side of the abyss are the perverts and ill-minded who use the internet to look for potential victims and this should not be underplayed BUT should also not by over hyped. I thought that, at time, Dr Beecham, made out that everyone on every SN site was "out to get you". It IS VERY important we teach our students safe usage and CEOP and the THINKUKNOW websites are great resources but also we need to be careful not to create an impression that cyberspace is nothing but a playground for predators. I have the same concern over the way that the media has hyped up the 'stranger danger' to an extent where parents will not let their children out of the house.
I would also link this progamme to some of the excellent ones on the effective use of the internet (including SN sites) for teaching and learning and there were some useful comments towards the end of this programme on that.

E-safety5 June 2008 - 07:13~Excellent programme and good to see e safety featuring in its own right. I am a police officer and deal with the aftermath of the lack of self knowledge shown by children who get themselves into trouble on the world wide web. In the South West region we are working hard to tie in CEOP, the Police forces and the schools into e-safety activity across all schools and youth groups.
Well done - More of the same please.

E - safety3 June 2008 - 15:26Superb video. All pupils should be taught about the dangers of the Internet, particularly about Social network Sites. Parents also need to be informed as I will guarantee that 90+% of parents don't know what their children get up to on the net !!

E-safety2 June 2008 - 15:05Great video; hopefully more schools / parents will get the message and realise that although children are technically adept with the use of technology they do not always possess the life skills necessary to use the technology safely
