Part of the series EYFS Today

Albert Bradbeer Primary in Longbridge has embraced play and active learning which sits at the heart of the Learning and Development theme in the new EYFS framework.

Play is central to the new requirements of the EYFS and can provide evidence for all six areas of learning.

Former Albert Bradbeer pupil, Professor Chris Pascal from the Centre for Research in Early Childhood and the school's Foundation Stage coordinator Kathryn Pritchard explore what this looks like in practice.

Planning the role play area is an essential starting point for each term's topic and involves the children as much as the teachers. This term a zoo is the popular choice, with a smaller group opting to build a swamp.

Kathryn demonstrates how to use the role play areas and then observes the children to see their development. Through the following child initiated play, the pupils demonstrate sustained shared thinking, collaboration and teamwork.

Professor Chris Pascal reviews the benefits of the new framework and how it can equip children with the life skills needed in today's world. She also examines the challenge it will pose for some schools.

This is most definitely a very inspiring video. I wish all the reception children had the same opportunity and freedom. ...
