Early Reading
Langley Primary School in Oldbury has been identified by Sir Jim Rose as having excellent practice in phonics.
Teacher Helen Jones is teaching the reception and Year 1 class, using two techniques involving sound buttons and robot arms to help pronunciation. But is synthetic phonics just another fashion, and is there any evidence that it works?
Helen believes that it does work, but it can be complicated and she shares some useful tips for other teachers starting a synthetics phonics programme.

Phonics26 October 2009 - 17:04I have come across a few people that were taught using phonics but ended up very confused when it came to writing. I agree that children need to practice making the phonetic sounds for good annunciation and that bright children will use the system well when they are reading, but unless you adjust the dictionary to be standardised phonetically you still need to learn 'whole words' . futball = football (how does a child know which is the correct spelling).

Synthetic Phonics1 January 2009 - 23:46My school is in Argentina and we have implemented synthetic phonics with outstanding results! We are using Jolly phonics since 2007 it is very appealing and easy to deliver. The method works very well with ESL children ! We wathed all the videos on Teachers TV related on phonics, they are really great!

The way the teacher tought was very good. Anyone who have little idea of phonics can learn a lot from such videos. Excellent work by Teachers TV.

I am a supply teacher and find it very difficult to stay in touch with all the new strategies as funding goes directly to schools. This means that, effectively, supply teachers are out of the loop for CPD. Yet we are expected to keep up to date. Thankfully, I am in the NUT and they offer some free courses but I still have to travel there and pay my own way! It is only if a generous headteacher in a school where I may provide regular supply may have some spare cash and can afford to send me on CPD training. The government needs to address this issue. We are being treated like third class citizens. Thanks for all those dedicated supply teachers out there!

phonics24 August 2008 - 11:00I work in a special schoolfor spLD. The pace of learning is much slower and I use Jolly Phonics because I like the idea of sensory learning. Thank you for the tips on robot arms for segmenting pronunciation I will use this next term. A Brill lesson thanks Helen

phonic teaching21 August 2008 - 13:36I have watched lots of the early years videos on your site and as usual there was a teacher and a maximum of 10 children (and often an assistant)on the carpet in a silent classroom. What a delight that would be as most of us have 30 children squashed on a carpet with outside play areas that are so noisy we never have a quiet classroom. Shame the government dont address class sizes and standards would rise.
