From Good To Outstanding - David Pollicutt
Sydney Russell School has rated secondary English teacher David Pollicutt's lessons as 'good'. His challenge is to gain an 'outstanding' rating in just three weeks, using the help of a range of experts.
School inspector Clare Gillies assesses one of David's Year 8 lessons on characterisation within Great Expectations, and highlights some clear areas for improvement.
David heads off to get some one-to-one CPD and to work on pedagogy advice with English advisor Sabrina Broadbent, and received more tips from voice and communications expert Ulrika Schulte-Baukloh.
David then has just three weeks back in the classroom to put their advice into action before the inspector returns to observe a second lesson and deliver her final verdict.
Will David succeed in raising his game sufficiently to go from 'good' to 'outstanding'?

a good model13 December 2008 - 19:20thank you David for letting us share with you your classroom practices.I really enjoyed it especialy the good rapport you have with your students and I think you are among the teachers who should be taken as a model both in your enthusiasme and the importance you give to appearance.I also believe that moving from good to outstanding is a question of patience, perseverance persistence and practice. All the best

outstanding!9 December 2008 - 07:23David you are outstanding in my eyes! I am a young, male trainee teacher and I was really encouraged by watching this vid. And don't forget David you have the wonderful gift of being naturally good with young people, and that everything else can flow from there! I think you are fab, and that your dress sense and everything about your presentation is appealing to youngsters, who essentially want real characters to be teaching them, and not robots! Super

I was taught by this teacher22 November 2008 - 14:47I was taught by this teacher for my first three years at Sydney, and I have to agree that he does engage with the classes very well, and we always had a laugh, while at the same time managing to learn. It was a shame that I had to transfer in my fourth year.

outstanding lessons25 October 2008 - 09:00I think what is missing with judging 'outstanding' is the question of whether it can be repeated every lesson. Clearly under this criteria and with this example and given teachers lack of prep time, it is no, it cannot. Hence the comment about the voice coach and extra help from an AST.
Surely outstanding must be a grade that IS achievable evry lesson and a starred lesson as the one that can occur maybe once a week when conditions allow and perhaps when Ofsted pays a visit.
As an AST myself, I would aim every lesson, within my capability, to be outstanding but take exception that the criteria is so onerous that this may not be the judgement. A starred performance could be the one David produced; a one off under the right conditions and the time and support.

From good to outstanding Kath Morgan15 October 2008 - 11:01Whilst i found David to be an enthusiastic teacher, i was concerned that for him to progress from good to outstanding initiated assitance from a Voice coach and an advanced/specialist English teacher, surely this is teaching to the test!!!!!!

Well done David especially14 October 2008 - 08:23Well done David especially for being brave enough to allow others to comment on your teaching and then learn from the experience. As a teacher who is willing to reflect, I have no doubt you will excel in your career. Good luck.

Inspiring!13 October 2008 - 12:14The relationships were so good, yes, but the sartorial elegance was delightful: leading by example wearing interesting, professional attire setting standards for the pupils. Good to see a young male teacher showing some imagination and confidence in his clothes. There was such an air of enthusiasm in David and, whilst disappointment was evident, his comment about 'The journey' showed his commitment to improving his delivery, in order to improve his pupils' learning, was paramount.
