Mental Health - Supporting Young Minds
In a secondary school of 1,000 pupils there are, on average, 100 students suffering with mental health problems.
That number includes 50 seriously depressed, 10 with eating disorders and 20 with an obsessive-compulsive disorder.
But in 2005 Ofsted reported that most secondary schools in the UK are failing these pupils. How can schools support them better?
In this programme, we look at a range of strategies including peer support and counselling, and a whole-school focus on pupils' emotional well-being.
In addition, we discuss the importance of understanding that mental health problems can lead to a number of learning and behavioural difficulties.
We hear from students talking candidly about their mental health problems, whilst school staff and educational psychologist Helen Cowie (professor of mental health at the University of Surrey) express their views on how best to approach this significant but often hidden issue.

Children with Aspergers and High Functioning Autism9 June 2008 - 17:08Please don't forget children with Aspergers and High Functioning Autism who are forcibly "Included" in mainstream schools, with little or no support, even though they are known to be subject to anxiety, predisposed to sensory overload, and lack social skills / have communication problems.
This leads to misery and suffering. Many of them talk about suicide already at junior school age. To me, this constitutes mental child abuse.

Mental Health31 March 2006 - 23:57These are an excellent set of films which would certainly be useful in training situations. I liked the way they showed the different perspectives. Teachers do feel fearful of tacking some of the issues discussed and these films provide a good base to begin developing their knowledge and confidence in addressing many of the difficult issues faced in schools today. One small criticism related to the clip which showed the pupils meeting with the headteacher - I'm not sure the pupils really did have a 'voice' or the impact that they should have.
