KS3/4 Creative Arts - Art Assessment - Classroom Strategies
In this programme, the art departments of two schools reveal the strategies they use to help pupils understand how to improve their levels.
Kate Bullivant, head of art at St Michael's Catholic Grammar School in north London, has been experimenting with breaking down level descriptors and applying them to a Year 8 urban environment project.
Although the project is still new, Kate is already optimistic that it is successfully raising achievement and will lead to pupils performing better at GCSE.
Three miles away at East Barnet School, a large comprehensive, head of art Paul Chatterton feels it is important to regularly evaluate his pupils' work.
The programme looks in on a Year 7 Face of Objects lesson in which pupils are instructed on exactly how to improve their levels.

KS3/4 Assessment in Art13 June 2009 - 11:19I agree that assessment should not take away from the creative preactise but shoudl be a part of the process, if students do not know how to improve their skills then their time in the calssroom is not effectively spent, but assessment and feedback should be a part of the process not a seperate exercise, students and staff need to be more aware of this. APP will have an imapct on this when it is intriduced next year and all foundation subject teachers need t bea ware of what the deamnds of APP will be and how to ensure we embed it in a way that supports our teaching and ensures students progress without losing pratical working time.

KS3/4 Creative Arts - Art Assessment - Classroom Strategies10 November 2007 - 17:51I found this quite useful and I may very well use part of the programmes strategies. However, I thought the students comments at the end were quite interesting, in particular, how much time much of this type of assessment can take away from the actual art work the students want to do.
I also feel that art should not be made to feel like other 'academic' subjects.
It needs to maintain it's individuality. Art within schools, has much to offer many other subject teachers not only in the way it is taught but also how it is recieved by many students.
