Graham Downes, a senior lecturer in IT for early years, recommends:

  • Magic School - a magical piece of software
  • Microsoft Photostory v3 - a free download that can jazz up your classwork
  • Simple Remote Controlled Vehicle - a toy that children can steer by giving it simple instructions through a handset

Downes joins presenter Hermione Cockburn in our London studio to discuss the resources with Claire Deaville, early years and KS1 coordinator, and Colin Hynson, freelance education consultant.

Magic School The Magic School is a virtual school which pupils can explore and interact with. By entering a variety of rooms, children can superimpose their faces onto characters and take part in games and activities. They can also make cartoon friends to play with.

Microsoft Photostory v3 Free and easy to use, Photostory is not something that you would give the children to use but you could use in conjunction with Powerpoint to create a series of slides that you could put music underneath. There is a narrate button lots of information about self awareness.

Simple Remote Controlled Vehicle A bright, cheerful car follows simple forward, backwards, left and right commands using the hand held control pack. For ages three and upwards. The handset clips in and makes up the roof of the car, for safe keeping.
