Mind Your Languages
In many ways Greenhill Primary School is a primary like any. Yet here, the learning of modern foreign languages is embedded within the school's ethos.
Pupils from nursery to Year 6 are shown the wealth of cultures that language learning unlocks. This draws, in part, on the skills and interests of teaching staff and fits into classroom life with comparative ease.
Foreign language assistants from overseas add another dimension to the learning process and continue links with the school even after they return home.
The children, more susceptible to learning language at a young age, are taught a variety of languages including French, German, Italian and Spanish.
Innovative ideas and modern technology are used to engage their attention and promote a lasting enthusiasm for MFL.

I thought this programme was really inspiring and just shows what is possible to achieve at primary level. I wrote a post about the programme on my blog www.joedale.typepad.com called Language matters for all. Here is the link:

Great programme. Useful revision for me of techniques of involving young pupils with rolling balls to each other and having team races. Great idea to have a coloured folded card on the wall with the name under the flap. Will use this in my classroom. Rewarding to see how staff can be come interested in teaching a foreign language. I may be able to inspire some of my colleagues if I can persuade them to watch this program.

Mind your languages28 April 2006 - 17:57It is so important for children to hear their mother tongue being spoken- it helps ESOL parents and children to feel included. It brings the community together and builds relationships. Children can imitate easily, therefore being easier to learn languages as children.
