Part of the series Inspirations

The Scary Guy, a tattooed, giant of a man, talks to secondary students about taking responsibility for their behaviour, using his unconventional appearance to reinforce his anti-bullying message.

Scary talks to upper school students St Joseph's RC High School in Lancashire about his mission to eliminate hate, violence and prejudice. He certainly knows how to get the full attention of his audience, as his personal testimony, shock tactics and audience participation demonstrate in the first session.

Once the audience is hooked he issues his seven days and seven nights challenge, which asks them to only call people by their given name for a whole week.

In session two, Scary gets down to the business of explaining his philosophy using what he calls The Circle of Courage. Non-patronising interaction with the students, crazy diagrams, and humour are the tools of his trade and he wields them with an infectious passion.

I work in both primary and secondary schools and was deeply impressed by the work shown in the videos. I loved the change in technique used for each audience, it was a masterclass in tailoring your message to the audience. Absolutely superb and a brilliant message to give young people.
It's a pity we can't get Scary Guy in front of every student in the country.

From Boundstone Community College - My Y7 class were very impressed by the short video. A few comments from the class are as follows. - 'If you see someone get bullied what do you do. I tell the teacher but it never helps them, how do I help them. PS plz come to our school' 'Hi can you come into the school please because some people need to be taugh a lesson!' 'I'm being bullied (all school) and I need a little help with my short temper' 'Why do people bully?' ' I have been picked on and I think if you came to our school you could help this stop because I know how much it hurts@

Mr Scary - some of the serious comments amongst the various 'Hi's' and 'How many tatoos / piercings etc' My class looks forward in anticipation at your reply.

Scary Guy has been to my school this week. The impact he has is amazing. He challenges prejudices and preconceived ideas in a way that everyone understands.

Students responded really well, so did staff. We are all about to set out on the 7 day 7 night challenge. Changing attitudes is the only way we will see behaviour change.

I agree whole heartedly with Nikki. Scary Guy's programme is something the DCSF should look at. We will never see major change in schools until we tackle bullying and discrimination at its root.

You only have to look at the media to see that if anything, violence amongst young people is getting worse.

We need to see a bold and courageous lead at government level. Scary Guy is brilliant and an inspiration, but as he says himself, he can't change things by himself.

The Scary Guy has visited my city and been to my school. The impact he has had on our city community and on our pupils is phenomenal. He is singly the most inspirational speaker that I have ever seen and I know I am not alone in this view. I have also had the privilege of training and working with Pupil Ambassador Teams who have taken Scary's message forward into the Primary Schools where he has delivered his program. It has been a magical experience. I believe that his program, both Primary and Secondary, should be an entitlement of every child in the UK - at least. The UK government has announced that £3m will be available for Anti Bullying Pilots, yet they have not asked or accepted an invitation to meet with The Scary Guy. If you believe as I do in The Scary Guy and his mission, please speak out, be loud and be persistent. Thank you

I run an English language school in a small town ,Korinthos, in Greece. Yesterday my twelve- year-olds ( lower Intermediate level in an EFL class)watched the Scary Guy video and got so excited that they decided to invite the guy here to talk about peace in our schools.
They are going to send him an e-mail anyway, but the point is he touched the strings of their hearts with his seven pledges and rules he has set up. They left the classroom shouting in chorus :" don't close the door to people, always give for nothing in return, try to resolve problems without fighting"
As a teacher I'm delighted to use your videos in my classes

This video is one of the best pieces of film that teaches the children all about the hate, bullying and prejudice that is in our schools and society. The reactions of the children were not surprising as they learned that words used to hurt others come from learned behaviour and because it is learned it can also be unlearned. As a teacher in a special secondary school for children with social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties, this kind of interaction from The Scary Guy I'm sure would be of a great benefit. I am going to introduce the seven day challenge to some of our pupils in KS4 PSHE and hope that the exercise will help them think before they speak. Personally, I think it is an excellant piece of teaching for our young people.

watching this from Hong Kong and having just reviewed a PhD thesis which focused on the teaching of multiculturalism by envoking emphaty and tolerance ... Scary Guy does that really well, noticed that the school in the TV was marginally multicultural and how well this message would work in an international setting ... think primary children would understand this message too, we shouldn't underestimate them

Have you thought about getting in touch with the Scary Guy Team and bringing Scary to Hong Kong?!! The Programmes are currently being delivered across Europe.Check out The Scaruy Guy website. And Yes, you are right ... Primary school children grasp the concepts of this Programme as quickly if not more quickly in many cases than teenagers and adults. There are age appropriate differences in how the material is presented, but the fundamental concepts are as you see here, and primary school children fly with it.

I think this initially startling and perhaps genuinely scary experience for some quickly becomes thoughtprovoking and challenging. It would be particularly successful in secondary schools perhaps getting through in ways that others can't reach.
I think this course might not be suitable for primary schools but I think the point he made about what primary teachers need to keep in mind was well made. Also the thinking behind Scary's approach is inspirational and could be applied in a primary setting.

      Hello Eric

I agree with your comment - Scary's work is exactly as you describe ... thought provoking and challenging, using his looks and own real life experience to reach students and adults of all ages. Startling all with information that allows each to assess their own life, actions and words, see their responsibility and know that they have a choice in each of their own words as energy.

I also agree that the material that you saw in this piece is for secondary and above. However, Scary also presents a programme designed specifically for Primary school children from Reception through to Year 6. It is an amazing piece! Hopefully Teachers'TV will have the opportunity to show this programme too.

The Primary school children love the show (and him!) This too is often a learning piece in itself for many adults who sometimes assume that "He will be too Scary for little children" All I can tell you, based on every show I have seen him present at Primary, is that the younger the child, the faster and closer they see the truth of the message. It has revealed to me and left me certain that 'Fear' based on looks is a learned behaviour.
