Primary ICT - Natural Connections
ICT teacher Ophelia Vanderpuye pays a visit to a Finnish Primary School to discover how academic research has helped one teacher improve the way she teaches.
Ophelia is based in London and spends three days a week helping other schools incorporate IT in their classrooms. She is visiting primary teacher Marianne Bollstrom-Huttunen to discover different teaching techniques.
Marianne invites Ophelia along on a nature walk with her class of nine year olds. Ophelia observes that Marianne is not running a regular ICT class, but rather an integrated lesson of two or more subjects, which is something she has been working towards in London.
At the end of the day Ophelia follows Marianne to a conference where the spread of an IT network to other schools in Helsinki is discussed. Ophelia and Marianne discuss how she has incorporated academic research, gained from the University of Helsinki, into her class and the benefit it has had.

good to see that nordic countries are finally being recognised11 March 2009 - 20:51I was totally fascinated by this video because the way that ICT is integral to the learning process is something thats been personally identified by myself for many years. One of the reasons that I think ICT is so integral, it helps mix stability groups to have an equal learning platform because I sign up to the model that anywhere can be a learning space with the correct ICT help.

Inspiring!29 January 2009 - 03:39So inspiring!
I support the idea of INTEGRATING ICT into subjects. ...instead of it being this big scary other subject.
If 'writing' had not been invented, would we be teaching writing as a seperate subject?
ICT is integral to all we do now. Application of learning makes things more meaningful, therefore we should integrate ICT into other subjects.
Great film!

Very reassuring15 November 2007 - 11:57If you teach ICT in context through your topics, this method of working isn't a problem because the children become so independent. I just wish we had large rooms like the Finnish one. I have a bank of five computers in my room because I like to work like this but we are like sardines!
Thanks you. Liz
