Primary Special Needs - Using ICT
Yvonne Seymour from Cape Primary School is a self-confessed ICT novice. It was a subject she struggled with during teacher training and a subject in which she seriously lacked confidence.
Yet one of her ideas on how to use ICT for special educational needs pupils within a mixed ability class is now hailed as an excellent example of good practice. This programme looks at her idea, how she developed it and how any teacher with even the most basic of ICT skills could use it.
Yvonne's Year 3 class are taught to produce their own e-book, or electronic storybook, using very basic presentational software. They can adapt various techniques, like typing, recording sound, selecting pictures and scanning to their own abilities.
They can also work in pairs or mixed ability groups where the more able can support the less able. Producing an e-book allows every child in the class to participate in ICT and the fact that they become authors and illustrators promotes real ownership of their work.

I found the video very intresting and inspiring.
It would be very useful for me to know what software you use, so I can try to talk to the shcool and see how we can implement something like that.

using ICT for SEN pupils30 January 2007 - 17:34That was really inspiring, especially for an ICT-challenged practitioner like me... Hopefully all teachers and TAs will be enabled to be as effective as Yvonne in using computers in the classroom!

Re : Inspiring !30 January 2007 - 22:19I too found the video Inspiring. As an LSP I sometimes feel challenged by ICT. As adult and children there is always something new to explore and learn through the use of ICT. It was a delight to watch the enthusiasm and enjoyment on the children`s faces their knowledge and confidence was clearly visible.
