Year 8 students work with the Red Cross to mentor primary pupils

<synopsis>

At Hamstead Hall Community Learning Centre in Birmingham a group of Year 8 students volunteer to act as peer educators to help run a project with the Red Cross.

Operation Amphibian is a simulation activity designed to show young children how the Red Cross deals with emergencies, in this case, a severe flood.

The project is peer lead, meaning secondary pupils lead primary school children through the entire simulation.

Gill Allbutt of the Red Cross and her team train the peer educators to develop their leadership skills while gradually giving them responsibility and ownership of the exercise. Tasks include teaching first aid, land mapping, shelter construction and clean water distribution.

Finally, we hear the students reflections on the day's activities and what they have learned.

The Big Debate - Parents

Debating to what extent parents should be involved in schools

<synopsis>

Krishnan Guru-Murthy presents a lively debate to discuss to what extent parents should be involved in schools.

Is increased parental engagement the key to improving schools or does it just give pushy parents an opportunity to promote the interests of their own children at the expense of others?

Some teachers blame poor parenting for a range of problems including poor pupil behaviour, but should schools be involved in sorting this out?

Are the powers being given to parents to control schools, including setting up their own, likely to improve or exacerbate the problem?

Guests joining Krishnan include author Toby Young, journalist and campaigner Fiona Millar, General Secretary of the ATL Mary Bousted and Rachel Wolf of the New Schools Network, which helps parents to set up their own schools.

KS1/2 Science - Wowing the Parents with Practical Science

A primary school shows how it recieved its science status

<synopsis>

A look at the ideas and initiatives which helped Monteney Primary School gain specialist science status.

One successful idea was enlisting parents to help in science lessons. As well as allowing the children to show off their learning, it includes the parents in school life and helps them gain a greater appreciation of their child's abilities.

The school also introduced 'Wow Workshops', which focus on scientific enquiries and the skills needed to conduct them. The workshops have different themes, such as 'Amazing Animals'.

The school places a strong emphasis on cross-curricular science links to literacy, music, art, drama, numeracy and D&T, meaning science lessons can involve writing science songs, making rockets, role-playing and baking.

As a result, the staff at Monteney can see a real difference in their pupils' enthusiasm for science.

Working with Parents - Empowering Parents Across the Borough

Are parenting intervention teams engaging parents in education?

<synopsis>

Following the work of a parenting intervention team over a four-week period, this video asks how successful they are, and meet the parents they work with.

In 2006, the ethnically diverse London Borough of Tower Hamlets introduced free parenting classes available to all parents at any school trained to run the courses.

The video follows the work of the parenting intervention team, the teachers and community leaders who run the classes, and parents who attend. One of the parents involved is Tracey, a mother of three, who struggles to be a good role model for her daughter Ellie, who is under-achieving at primary school.

In looking at their work, it examines what impact the parenting classes are having on families from white, Somali, and Bengali communities, and whether they are the answer to getting parents more engaged with their children's education.

Cross-curricular Year 5 lessons about WW2

<synopsis>

A Year 5 teacher demonstrates three great lesson ideas for teaching World War II, focusing on Drama, Literacy and Design & Technology.

At Hillcrest Primary, Bristol, Ginny Perrin's pupils dress up in World War II clothes and act out being evacuees. They then board a virtual train, surrounded by posters and images on the interactive whiteboard depicting the countryside.

The pupils immerse themselves further by playing games from that era, helping them to build experiences that can be recalled in a literacy lesson.

Ginny then asks the children to write letters home to their parents using vocabulary specific to that period. Making sure they add meaning and purpose to their writing.

They are then challenged to build a model Anderson Shelter. A tennis ball is dropped from the same height to test the strength of the shelters. They also have to consider the different properties of materials and what would be most suitable for a real shelter.
