Great Lesson Ideas - Primary Cross Curriculum: World War II

Cross-curricular Year 5 lessons about WW2

<synopsis>

A Year 5 teacher demonstrates three great lesson ideas for teaching World War II, focusing on Drama, Literacy and Design and Technology.

At Hillcrest Primary, Bristol, Ginny Perrin's pupils dress up in World War II clothes and act out being evacuees. They then board a virtual train, surrounded by posters and images on the interactive whiteboard depicting the countryside.

The pupils immerse themselves further by playing games from that era, helping them to build experiences that can be recalled in a literacy lesson.

Ginny then asks the children to write letters home to their parents using vocabulary specific to that period. Making sure they add meaning and purpose to their writing.

They are then challenged to build a model Anderson Shelter. A tennis ball is dropped from the same height to test the strength of the shelters. They also have to consider the different properties of materials and what would be most suitable for a real shelter.

Learning Outside the Classroom: Pudsey Bolton Royd Primary School

A primary school shows how it promotes literacy among EAL pupils

<synopsis>

Pudsey Bolton Royd Primary School in Leeds has a large number of EAL pupils, so staff focus on improving the literacy of the whole school by taking steps to ensure learning is encompassed in every aspect of school life.

The school, which serves a predominantly South Asian community, has fully explored the potential of learning outside of the classroom through growing vegetables, cooking and other outdoor activities.

A visit from a "cooking bus" and the annual school potato growing competition are all part of the school's commitment to give pupils learning experiences that widen their knowledge and experience of the world around them, and provide an exciting and vital learning platform.

Philosophy classes and the school's buddy system also work cross culturally to instil confidence and encourage learners to find a voice and a place in this vibrant school community.

Learning Outside the Classroom: St. Peters Church of England Primary

Staff demonstrate how they support EAL pupils' learning

<synopsis>

The pupils speak over 20 different languages at St. Peter's Church of England Primary School in Leeds. Here staff demonstrate how they successfully aid pupils learning.

The school believes hands-on practical learning experiences are a necessity in aiding language skills and have created an outdoor growing area for pupils' use.

Working thematically, the teachers tie in the work they do outside and in the kitchen with project work in the classroom and discover that practical subjects and experiential learning helps both the children's understanding and their vocabulary.

Keen to make the school the centre of the community, the school also organises family trips, cookery classes for parents, and includes elderly members of the community in the knitting club.

A school makes the most of its outside learning space

<synopsis>

Southdale Junior School in Wakefield has worked hard to create an outdoor learning area to help stimulate learning across the school.

The school has converted one of its old school rooms into a potting shed, and the pupils are now helping to dig a new school pond.

The emphasis is on learning through cross-curricular activities, and creative learning experiences include pupils undertaking crime scene investigations to scientifically identify who's been eating their strawberries, and venturing into the world of frogs with a scheme of working that includes music, art, literacy, film making, geography and science.

Later, we discover that the school has opened up a summer cafe offering cakes made by the children with fruit from the garden, which parents and carers are welcome to enjoy.

Pupils learn about the exploitation of the world's resources

<synopsis>

Pupils grapple with ethical ideas surrounding the exploitation of the world's natural resources through curriculum-based projects.

St James' Junior and Infant School has spent the past four years revising its curriculum around central themes prescribed by the pupils including "our world", "our community", "ourselves" and "our future".

Among other activities based on the central themes, the pupils enjoy harvesting the school's vegetable garden and cooking new foods; the practical experiential learning of growing vegetables and cooking have really taken hold.

Finally, they celebrate the end of their days at junior school with an exciting transition project and a school outing.
