Part of the series Better Learning with ICT

Secondary French teacher Marie Guyomarc'h, investigates how to make use of online communities in her classes.

Online communities and social networks are often shunned by teachers because of negative publicity and online safety surrounding certain websites.

Marie meets with Lisa Stevens, a primary Spanish teacher, who relishes using social media websites for teaching purposes.

Lisa explains the benefits of using websites such as Twitter and Voicethread, and demonstrates how you can use them in the classroom.

Later, Marie faces her challenge of taking back what she's learned and using it in the classroom.

The support materials below, including advice from Becta, are designed to help you use ICT in your own classroom.

This is an enhanced video, giving you access to extra video and resources directly from the video player.

Create a record of the videos you have watched and how they have helped your professional development, to demonstrate CPD.

Just to clarify - eLanguages is a way of making links with classrooms across the world. In the sense that you are making partnerships or 'twinnings' and using e-mail and online technology to communicate it is 'etwinning'

However, eTwinning is also a programme in its own right, linking school across Europe in collaborative projects- http://www.etwinning.net/en/pub/help/faq.htm

And October is a great time to get involved - eTwinning Weeks will be running all month. Find out more here.

Nice video. I am always on the lookout for practical examples of good practice. I am adding a link to this video in the section on social networking at the ICT4LT site, Module 1.5, Section 12.4: http://www.ict4lt.org

Another safe social networking site which has global reach but a controlled userbase is the Learning Landscape for Schools (http://www.ll4schools.co.uk/). There is a free service with 20 accounts and a paid for service which allows schools to create named accounts for their pupils. Schools can register here: http://tinyurl.com/nbpwjy.
