Gender in the UK - Girls in a Girls' School
Susan Higgins, headteacher at Parliament Hill girls school, believes that while the past decade has focussed the gender debate on boys, there is still work to be done on girls' achievement.
Although girls from families with high aspirations may be doing well, there is a need to address the culture of low aspiration in other groups. Parliament Hill's intake includes students from a ward with some of the highest national incidences of domestic violence.
This programme looks at the effectiveness of confident teaching in a single-sex setting, and demonstrates how the school tackles the issues facing their ambition to promote achievement amongst all its girls.

Its all in the ways the girl child is brought up or socialised!22 September 2008 - 08:26
I am a university lecturer at the University of Swaziland in Africa. I did a research on curriculum and gender in colleges of education. The results indicated that girls grow knowing that they are 'a class of their own' different from boys. Primary schools in Swaziland are dominated by women while men dominate the higher forms. This alone creates a perception and this perception is carried over to the adult world - and schools and colleges of education endorse it. Thank you for teachers t.v

FIrst of all, i appreciate17 September 2008 - 02:03
FIrst of all, i appreciate this program as it is a good try to give everybody an overall understanding about Girls' school. However, i do not think i have the same opinion as what is stated in the videotape. It is my belief that both men and women should attend the same school or classes. Why?
The first thing being realized is that students as well as teachers may expect to gain more and more interest and joy! You can imagine you are in a class of a co-ed school, what you see are actually wonderful activities not only within the class, but also in the whole school what you may not see in any one gender school !
Second, i remember a student in this videotape said that she felt really upset and shy communicating with boys in class; so that she would be better and better in case she just studied in the class of only girls. You see, she 's confused to have even a communication with a boy. So, what will she can do in the futute? I mean, when she has a job for her own, she will undoubtedly have to do work with many men, not women at all. How will she be able to do to deal with this if at the age of school she did not have any practice doing that?
So, that is what i am dying to say!
Feel free to raise your voice to protect your own view !
Thanks!

"boys are the problem" ??16 September 2008 - 20:40
I don't understand how Sue Higgins can say this!!
She keeps refering to twenty years ago and girls' evolution, but there is no proof whatsoever in the video that this evolution is due to single sex schools! Society is made of both sexes, and separating them isn't doing anyone any good, IMHO.

Neglect not the gift that is in thee16 September 2008 - 18:18
A very powerful and convincing articulation of the importance of single sex education for girls today and in the future by the girls and staff at Parliament Hill led by the inspirational Sue Higgins. The concept of confident and creative teaching is shown as both the appropriate pedagogy and an entitlement.
