Summary
How can secondary schools teach emotional skills to teenagers? This programme examines two schools' approaches to the subject and uncovers what their pupils think.
The way teenagers recognise, understand and deal with their feelings is now considered vital for good learning behaviour. Consequently, two secondary schools in Wiltshire teach a modular programme in emotional intelligence at KS3 and KS4.
The Corsham School, a Specialist Visual Arts College, has a broadly average pupil intake. Springfields Specialist Sports College is an SEN residential school for troubled teenagers who have been unable to cope in a mainstream setting.
In a form tutor session on bullying, science teacher Emma Davies at the Corsham School helps Year 7s to recognise discrepancies between their feelings and their actions.
At Springfields, pastoral care team member John Rogers teaches his Year 9 group how to change their attitude from negative to positive.

Its ,infact,an age of stress and strife.Due to immense harmonal change going on with in them they are unable to cope up with the environment they are already in and the expectation of those around them.
At the same time they perceive themselves to be supesior or inferior to others and this puts them in a very conflicting state finding it really difficult to give a vent to their feelings and emotions.
Their problems have to be tackled genuinely and the framework is excellent

Its really wonderful to work with children at initial level because majority of the societal problems are due to not dealing and teaching emotional balance at right time
It is encouraging to see behaviour problems being tackled at the root cause, effectively. Also a programme which encourages self esteem and good relationships helps create a great working environment.

This framework is an excellent step forward in a non threatening manner. It is often so difficult, for even adults, to express feelings.To have sessions once a week for five years will be so very empowering for these students.They will have much more of a chance of being powerful role models as young adults.
