Only Human
This educational resource made for and by KS2 pupils is designed as a starting point for discussing issues of race and ethnicity in schools.
Only Human takes a particular viewpoint about racism: that there is only one race, the human race. This makes race a redundant concept. The view is then explored with teachers and pupils alike responding to questions, and challenging their fears.
The idea of race is also explored through looking at the holocaust and the slave trade. Later there is a question and answer session in a mock chat show setting, where host Leticia challenges the children's views about themselves.
The programme is designed to be used with a teachers' pack that is available as a resource attached to this programme.

Only Human Video - Racism20 April 2009 - 15:10
I, along with a class of year 5/6 pupils found this video to be very intersting and formative. The children were horrified to see Anna's problem on the when the boy attempted to strangle her. When they saw the bus driver go back down the stairs and ignore what was happening they were stunned. This showed in their written work as well as their faces whilst watching.
At the end of the film, they all wanted to contribute - unfortunately there was not enough time. We will certainly discuss this further during our next PHSE lesson.
I only wish I could find more short films to show the pupils, dealing with PHSE including, Self worth, change/transition, friendships and Its good to be me! Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction?
