Performance Management - Assessing Excellent Teachers
ET Status became effective in schools in September 2006 and helps experienced teachers to remain in the classroom without having to take on managerial roles.
In this programme, Martin Flatman, director of the National Assessment Agency for the Advanced Skills Teacher and Excellent Teacher schemes in England and Wales, assesses three teachers from Ratton School in Eastbourne to see if they would make suitable ETs.
Martin monitors lessons by history curriculum manager Jane Pittman, science teacher Chris Reene and French teacher Mimi Woods, each of whom has been nominated as potential Excellent Teachers by headteacher David Linsell.
Throughout a half day assessment process, we follow our three candidates from classroom, to interview stage, where Martin identifies their strengths and weaknesses and decides whether ETs has been demonstrated.

The program provides useful food for thought to me as a teacher supervisor. the ideas will help assessing the work of the teachers under my supervision mainly in my country where assessing teachers is still a matter of impressionistic evaluation.

Seeing this programme when actually looking for Big Brother was sheer good luck. I work in housing-related support for young people, 16-25. Staff have low skills, low expectations, low pay. Hard to get them on board if they're not managed properly. Management unimaginative in ensuring good progression. I'm gonna change all that! Watch this space.

Very useful, both for assessing excellent teachers and for assessing teachers on the Excellent Teachers scheme. Would have been better if more examples of successful applicants.

it was good to see that some, quite franky, ropey teaching wasn't simply rubber stamped as excellent. sometimes i'm not sure what excellent means: excellent in relation to what? i think it would have been good to see someone in action who had been successful to be able to compare meaningfully.

Sneak Preview: Assessing Excellent Teachers16 September 2007 - 22:18
Very interesting program. This has brought to my attention the criteria used to decide whether a teacher is 'excellent', a quality I would like to be labelled with. I am passionate about teaching science and would like to pursue the AST route.
Thanks for the sneak preview.
