Steve Jones
Professor Steve Jones has built up a formidable reputation for his work on genetic diversity. He has written easy-to-read, bestselling books on complex subjects such as evolution and genes.
In this programme, his ability to popularise science is tested to the limit as he addresses an unfamiliar audience: the 10-year-olds of Hotham Primary School in Putney, London. Will Steve Jones crack under the pressure? Or will the children end up teaching him a lesson?
What actually transpires is a master class in teaching. By enlisting the help of fifty live snails, Professor Jones leaves his young pupils enchanted, and better informed than many adults about the importance of genetic diversity.

Superb watching someone so knowledgeable teach, engaging children without any bossiness. I loved the practical activities and can see how a class teacher might follow this up with a sequence of lessons afterwards which would stimulate enquiry. Wonderful.

I was amazed to hear Steve Jones being told that writing things down was not important. That is fundamental to science, for trialling and establishing controls etc. Perhaps the teacher was a none-science person; he has spent the past 30 years in the field!
