Teacher-Pupil: A Good Working Relationship
Jake, who left school at the age of 14 after being excluded from mainstream education, reflects on the complexities of a good working teacher-pupil relationship.
Jake, now a trainee chef, speaks of his teachers' inability to understand and support him - except for one teacher who found a way to create a good working relationship with him, providing him with enough support and encouragement to gain some qualifications.
Experts and young people give their views to explain why relationships are important, and what teachers can do to make them work with all children in the classroom.

This video focuses upon meaningful relationships between teachers and learners and raises what has become a very sensitive and often very difficult issue as both actors come under increasing pressure to perform for institutional placing on a league table under test and exam conditions. Indeed the latter seems key in reasoning offered by all commentators in this enquiry and in particular highlights the absolutely essential task of making the effort of knowing and actually caring about the children we are trying to encourage to learn and achieve to their potential and ability. Above all it raises the essential need for alternative methods of reaching kids with huge emotional difficulties by offering a learning environment outside the stereotypical classroom and teaching tools and methods outside curriculum based teacher training expectations.I would also recommend the topic which deals with teacher parent communication.

This is excellent. It is the relationships,in my opinion, between students and teacher that provides the basis for excellent learning. One significant adult in a childs life can and does make a difference. The teachers positive influence doesnt vanish when the student leaves the school. It remains, as good memories do, and is vital often a long way into adulthood.
My students say that the relationships they have with their teachers is the most important to their learning.
If they love the subject but have a negative relationship with the teacher they can and do stop themselves learning.Whereas if they do not like a subject but have a terrific relationship with the teacher they will learn inspite of themselves because they are enjoying the lessons with that particular teacher.
Relationships need to come first and foremost in teaching especially with our students at risk. We need more world wide videos such as these shown to all.Thank you all who are involved in making these.

teacher-pupil a good working relationship24 October 2008 - 05:38
this is very useful. i particularly liked the message about teacher training programme lacking emotional development content and how busy the profession with measurements (assessments) to recognise the individual differences in learners. i would have liked some deeper critique of the learning issues for minority students and the minority staff. thank you

I thought that this program was excellent. It really does focus well on one of the most important and fundamental issues in teaching. I thought that Rob Plevin really put his ideas across clearly and effectively in pinpointing the crucial role teachers have in building a good pupil/teacher relationship to promote effective learning.
Great. Would like to see another program on this.
