Ways into Shakespeare's Othello
English teacher Sabrina Broadbent leads a masterclass on Shakespeare, using her expertise to engage a group of Year 10 students.
Sabrina aims to create memorable learning by keeping it active and fun, and by engaging the students' curiosity, with the group studying Othello for the first time.
In this first masterclass, the students learn key quotes, try writing a line of blank verse in iambic pentameter, and consider how a handkerchief might be used as a dramatic device. Through these activities, she aims to help students engage with the text, ready to engage with the plot and the whole text of Othello in the second masterclass.
This programme is the first in a two-part Shakespeare masterclass series, providing teachers with examples of how to make learning memorable.

This Masterclass Wow!22 June 2009 - 14:55
This isn't even my subject but it has inspired me to create an engaging lesson. I find Sabrina speaks to the students at an adult level yet keeps control of the direction. A very useful and informative lesson, a joy to see. I would love to see more Masterclasses particularly with topics which are notoriously dull for students (Shakespeare, Chaucer, maths, anatomy etc)brought to life in such innovative and entertaining ways.
